Unfortunately, with the amount of competition that exists for web designers, a high percentage of freelancers and small design studios feel the need to jump on every opportunity that comes their way.

Accepting every project is not a good idea for a number of reasons. Many potential clients, especially in today’s economic situation, will be looking for something very cheap which may not give the designer enough time to do their best job. Of course, there are other reasons as well.

Here we will take a detailed look at several of the most significant factors that you should always think about when you are deciding on a project or a client. When work comes your way, remember these factors and use them to help as you decide if it is something you should pursue.

1. Income

This is one that very few designers will forget, but it needs to be mentioned. Of course, the amount of money that you will make on a project should be one of the factors that weighs in your decision. You’re sure to run in to a lot of potential clients who want the world on a very limited budget.

The price that you need to charge for a project will be directly tied to the amount of time and effort that it will require from you, and that will directly relate to the specifics of what the clients want. If you find that a project will take you much longer than can be justified by the client’s budget, either pass on the job or present them with an option to compromise on some of the things they want.

2. Deadlines

Almost every project will involve a deadline of some type. Larger projects may even have a number of deadlines or milestone dates that need to be met. In some cases the deadline may not be as firm, but the client will still have an expectation of when it will be complete.

If a client has a time line that simply isn’t possible for you, let them know that it isn’t going to work. Tell them when you think you would be able to get it done and see if they can accept this deadline. Otherwise, you could increase your pricing for the rush job, or walk away.

3. Match

Each design will have some strengths and weaknesses, which is simply natural. Not every client that comes your way will be a great fit for what you do. Of course, you will want to challenge yourself and take some new projects to improve skills in certain areas, but generally your projects should be a good fit with your abilities and experience.

4. Likes and Dislikes

Just like each design will have strengths and weaknesses, you will also have certain types of work that you enjoy doing more than others. If you want to enjoy your work more, make an effort to find work in the types of things that you like to do.

5. Schedule

Just like pricing is important, you should also put a lot of emphasis on your current workload. If you are already as busy as you can handle, don’t take new projects or at least schedule them to be stated at some point in the future.

If you don’t have the time to add a new client to your workload, talk to them to see if they are in a position to wait a few weeks or months, whatever the case may be, until your workload will be more conducive to a new project.

3 Locations Where Your Favicon is Shown

Do you want to see all the places where a favicon can be displayed? Then, just follow along, and I’ll show you.

To do this, I’ll give you the URLs of two websites. They are two of my favorites, but most of you have probably never been to either one before. If you have, then choose the one you have never visited. That way you can see the favicon appearing suddenly, when the browser finds and displays it. Here are the URLs, but don’t go there yet! Wait a minute!

URL2: www.triddlers.com

1st Place: the Address Bar

All right. Let’s go. The first thing I want you to do is open a new tab ( or new window if you have to ). Now type in your URL in the Address Bar. Look quick – there’s the favicon! It’s just to the left of what you just typed in.

2nd Place: the Tab Bar

Look at the browser tab. You should see the favicon right to the left of the title. If you don’t have a tabbed browser, then you’ll just have to miss seeing this favicon location.

3rd Place: Bookmarks or Favorites

I asked you to pick a URL you haven’t visited, so you obviously won’t find it in your favorites yet. Put it there by clicking ‘Favorites’, then ‘Add to Favorites’. Next, click the ‘Add’ button. When you return to ‘Favorites’, your new addition will be at the bottom of the list. Its favicon should be next to it.

If you have just made your own favicon, and you can’t find it anywhere, don’t give up yet! This kind of thing is always happening. Just follow this procedure:

1) Clear your cache.

2) If this doesn’t reveal your favicon, then you’ll need to close your browser, and then open it again.

3) If that still doesn’t work, there are only two possibilities left: a) Your browser doesn’t support favicons, which is highly unlikely, or b) You don’t really HAVE a favicon!

OK, it says ‘favicon.ico’. But it still might not be a REAL favicon. You have to create a favicon according to the proper procedure, or it won’t work. The next paragraph has more info about the easiest way to do this.

The contents can be nicely organized but if it is too busy with long text segments, unnecessary material, promotional offers, sales pitches and lots of animations then it is considered very noisy and very cluttered. This will discourage any visitor especially if it is the start-up page. This also makes the upload too slow.

Advertising on your website is certainly acceptable but overpowering ads are guaranteed to drive visitor away. Using the pop-up ads or messages is still a common practice but the problem is that most people block these so they will not see yours and if they do they may be irritated by them. This will not build a good relationship with your visitor.

If you website is done well and has not made any of the mistakes we have discussed but the navigation is messed up you will lose your visitors.
